The main features to be checked when choosing a controller for a stand-alone system are:

- The technology:  direct coupling, or including a power converter (MPPT or fixed DC input)
- The battery pack voltage (many controllers have switchable - or even automatic - battery voltages).
- The Maximum PV current, or Load Current,
- With power converters, the nominal power,
- The ability of managing a Genset
